Medical-grade and body-safe silicone

The highest tier is medical-grade silicone, sometimes listed as body-safe, skin-safe, or food-grade. It is the same non-porous, hypoallergenic material used in medical devices, which is why it feels soft, stays odour-free, and is safe for regular contact with sensitive tissue. Products in this range often carry a CE marking alongside the material claim. If a listing names the grade rather than just the word silicone, that is a strong signal of a genuine material.

Soft and blended silicone

Cheaper toys may use a silicone blend, where silicone is mixed with a porous filler to cut cost. These still feel soft at first but can develop odour and surface tackiness after a few uses, which real silicone does not. A very low price is the most common tell. When a listing calls the surface soft or skin-friendly without naming a grade, treat it as a blend until you can verify the material.

How to spot a fake

Genuine silicone has a matte, slightly grippy feel and returns to shape slowly when squeezed; jelly and PVC feel greasy, shiny, or sticky. Real silicone does not hold odour and does not melt under gentle heat. The simplest check is the price and the description: a medical-grade silicone body is rarely sold for pocket change, and a seller who is proud of the material will say exactly which grade it is.

By waterproof rating and cleaning method

How waterproof a silicone vibrator is decides how you clean it, which is the biggest daily difference between models.

Fully submersible (IPX7)

A submersible body can be used in the bath or shower and, more importantly, can be rinsed straight under a running tap after use. This is the easiest type to keep clean, since every surface can be washed without worrying about water reaching the motor. Most modern silicone vibrators are fully waterproof; the rating, usually IPX7 or higher, will be stated on the listing.

Splash-proof or water-resistant

A splash-proof model handles a few drops but is not meant to be submerged, so it should be wiped with a damp cloth rather than rinsed. The seal around the charging port and buttons is the weak point. If shower or bath use appeals to you, confirm the model is fully waterproof before buying; splash-proof is a different, lower standard.

Charging port and seals

The charging method affects how waterproof the body stays over time. Magnetic and self-healing pin connectors keep water out better than an open rubber flap, which can tear or loosen with use. Whichever the model uses, make sure the port is fully dry before charging, and avoid charging a toy that is still wet.

By stimulation function on the silicone body

Single-function

A single motor drives one kind of stimulation, such as a wand head for external contact or a curved shaft for internal use. These are the most straightforward to use and often the quietest, since one motor and one sealed body mean fewer moving parts. They suit someone who knows exactly which kind of stimulation they want.

Dual-stimulation

Dual-stimulation bodies carry two motors, most commonly a shaft for internal use paired with an external arm for the clitoris. The rabbit shape is the classic example. Each side can often be controlled independently, so the internal and external rhythms do not have to match. This is the go-to for blended pleasure from a single device.

Multi-function

A multi-function silicone body combines three or more kinds of stimulation, such as vibration, flapping, sucking, or thrusting, in one device with several modes each. These trade simplicity for variety: you get a lot of range without buying several toys, at the cost of a slightly busier control scheme. They suit someone who likes to change sensation mid-session.

Before first use

Charge the toy fully before its first use; most silicone vibrators are USB-rechargeable, either by a magnetic connector or a self-healing pin port, and a full charge takes one to three hours. Wash it before it touches your body, even though it is new: a quick rinse with warm water and mild soap, or a wipe with a damp cloth if it is splash-proof only, removes any residue from manufacturing and packaging. Check the waterproof rating before getting it wet, and never submerge a model that is only water-resistant. Finally, prepare a water-based lubricant, because silicone lubricant reacts with a silicone body and should not be used at all.

During use

Silicone has a soft, slightly grippy surface, which is why a water-based lubricant is essential: it lets the toy glide instead of drag. Silicone lubricant bonds to silicone and degrades the surface, leaving it permanently tacky and damaged, so avoid it and any hybrid or oil-based lube. Start on the lowest intensity and move the toy slowly rather than pressing it still against one spot, which can cause numbness. Because silicone is non-porous, it does not absorb lubricant the way porous materials do, so a little lube goes a long way and the surface stays clean throughout the session. If you are using a multi-function model, switch modes gradually to find the combination that works.

Cleaning and storage

The cleaning routine depends on the waterproof rating. A fully submersible silicone body can be rinsed under warm running water and washed with mild soap or a dedicated toy cleaner, then patted dry with a lint-free cloth. A splash-proof model should be wiped with a damp, soapy cloth instead, then a clean damp cloth, keeping water away from the charging port and buttons. Do not boil a silicone vibrator even if the silicone itself could handle it, because the internal motor and battery cannot. Store the toy in a fabric pouch or its box, and keep it from pressing directly against other silicone toys, since different silicone grades can react and fuse when stored touching. Recharge every few weeks to keep the battery healthy.
