What the motor actually moves is the first decision, and it is the clearest way to tell a self-stroking model from a vibrating one.

Telescopic thrusting

A piston drives the sleeve back and forth on its own, so the toy strokes the shaft while you hold it or prop it in place. The stroke is short and fast, a reciprocating motion closer to a pumping rhythm than a buzz, with a few models reaching around two hundred strokes a minute. During use

With a self-stroking model, hold the body steady or mount it on its base and let the motor do the rhythm; with a vibration-only unit, you still provide the stroke and use the controls to tune the buzz. If the toy has separate buttons or a dial for suction, vibration, and thrusting, adjust them independently rather than running everything at once. Cleaning and storage
